The ETS Praxis Series exams are designed to assess subject matter knowledge and other competencies for individuals planning a career in teaching.  Many prospective teachers must begin by taking the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), which includes a test of basic mathematics skills as well as reading and writing.  Often colleges use Praxis PPST scores to evaluate candidates for entry into teacher preparation programs. 

Before achieving licensure, many states also require candidates to pass one or more Praxis II exams.  Primary school teachers must typically pass the Praxis II Elementary Education exams, which include a math component, while those planning to teach high school math must typically pass the Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge (0061/5061 or 5161) exam.
