California educators planning to teach science at the secondary school level typically must pass the CSET Science exam. CSET Science consists of four subtests. Each CSET Science subtest may be taken and passed separately. Subtests 1 and 2 are general science exams. Subtest 1 covers astronomy, dynamic processes of the Earth, Earth resources, waves, forces and motion, and electricity and magnetism. Subtest 2 covers ecology, genetics and evolution, molecular biology and biochemistry, cell and organismal biology, heat transfer and thermodynamics, and the structure and properties of matter. Subtest 3 and 4 exams are specialized exams offered in four areas of concentration: biology/life science, chemistry, Earth and planetary science, and physics. Candidates seeking a foundational-level general science certification need only pass subtests 1 and 2. Candidates wishing to teach general and integrated science, as well as a specific area of concentration, must pass subtests 1 and 2, plus the subtest 3 exam corresponding their specific area of concentration. Candidates wishing to teach exclusively in a specific area of concentration (without the option to teach general science) must pass only the subtest 3 and 4 exams corresponding to that concentration.
