Special News - STARS Program Offers Educational Ocean Cruise in Hawaii for Teachers

Special News from September 12, 2012

Below is an exciting opportunity for teachers, forwarded to us by one of our Prep Class Instructors who is also connected with the University of Hawaii.  We want to share this info with our site users and newsletter subscribers who may be interested in applying.

Please read the original message below, sent by Jim Foley, C-MORE Marine Science Educator at the University of Hawaii (http://cmore.soest.hawaii.edu/education.htm):

Aloha Teachers,

The Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) in collaboration with the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program invite you to apply for the Science Teachers Aboard Research Ships (STARS) program.

The STARS program is a professional development opportunity for teachers to join C-MORE and the HOT group on a 5 day research cruise aboard The University of Hawaii’s research vessel Kilo Moana.  During the cruise, you will work with other teachers and scientists to conduct oceanographic sampling, data processing and analysis.  In addition, there will be classroom activities and lectures introducing ways to bring current oceanographic research into your classroom.

We have one remaining cruise scheduled for this year: October 6–10, 2012.  For more information on the STARS program go to (http://cmore.soest.hawaii.edu/education/teachers/stars.htm) where you will find a sample schedule as well as an application form.

Space is extremely limited so please apply early!  The deadline to apply for first consideration for the October cruise is this Friday, September 14th.

If you are unable to make this cruise but are still interested in participating, please apply anyway for first consideration on future cruises. Grants are available to cover transportation and substitute teachers if necessary (http://cmore.soest.hawaii.edu/education/teachers/gems.htm).

Please contact stars@soest.hawaii.edu with any questions.
