RICA Practice Tests

Update: The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) previously announced that the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) had been retired and would no longer be offered after June 30, 2025. However, on July 2, the CTC announced that the governor had signed Assembly Bill 121, which contains provisions allowing specified candidates until October 31, 2025 to take and pass the RICA.
Some teacher candidates may now have three options: take the RICA before October 31, take a Commission-approved performance assessment that includes literacy instruction, or take the Foundations of Reading Test (FoRT). We advise consulting with the CTC or your credential advisor for details about your individual situation and requirements.
Teachers Test Prep will continue offering our existing RICA prep programs for as long as the test is available, and we also now offer both live and self-paced FoRT preparation.
Read below for more info about the RICA Practice Tests or learn about FoRT Practice Tests.
Our free online RICA Practice Tests are designed by leading educators based on the official content specifications and closely replicate all aspects of the actual exam, including test length, content areas, difficulty level and question types.
After you complete each full-length practice test, your exam will be instantly auto-graded and you'll see your likelihood of passing. You can then view all the questions you got right and wrong, along with the correct answers. You’ll also receive a breakdown of your individual strengths and weaknesses by content domain, so you can focus your study time on the areas that will benefit you most.
Our first RICA Practice Tests (Version 1) and basic diagnostics are free.
If you wish to access our second RICA Practice Test (Version 2), enroll in Core Plus or Golden Apple Online Prep. Both programs include an additional practice test with video explanations of each answer, as well as many other study features.
