CSET English Overview
California educators planning to teach English and related subjects at the secondary school level typically must pass the CSET English exam. CSET English consists of four subtests. Each CSET English subtest may be taken and passed separately.
Subtest 1 covers Reading Literature and Informational Texts, and Composition and Rhetoric.
Subtest 2 covers Language, Linguistics, and Literacy.
Subtest 3 covers Communication: Speech, Media, and Creative Performance.
Subtests 1 and 2 consist of multiple-choice questions. Subtests 3 and 4 consist of constructed-response questions.
