CSET Multiple Subjects Overview
California educators planning to teach elementary school or special education typically must pass the CSET Multiple Subjects exam, which consists of three subtests (101, 214, 103). Each CSET Multiple Subjects subtest may be taken and passed separately.
Subtest 1 covers Language and Linguistics; Non-Written and Written Communication; Reading Comprehension and Analysis; World History; US History; and California History.
Subtest 2 covers Number Sense; Algebra and Functions; Measurement and Geometry; Statistics, Data Analysis and Probability; Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; and Earth and Space Sciences.
Subtest 3 covers Dance; Music; Theater; Visual Art; Movement Skills and Movement Knowledge; Self-Image and Personal Development; Social Development; Cognitive Development from Birth Through Adolescence; Social and Physical Development from Birth Through Adolescence; and Influences on Development from Birth Through Adolescence.
All subtests consist of both multiple-choice and constructed-response questions.

2025 CSET Multiple Subjects Test Dates*
Computer-based testing for the CSET Multiple Subjects exam is available year-round by appointment, Monday through Saturday (excluding some holidays), on a first-come, first-served basis during the testing windows listed below. Alternatively, online-proctored testing is offered remotely for Subtests 1 & 3 and is available by appointment during one-week testing windows each month.
